Five things every UK beginner should know before they head out for their first wild camp.
- Scotland allows wild camping almost anywhere — England and Wales require landowner permission. Know the difference before you pitch.
- Always tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back — a simple text message can save your life if you don't check in
- Check the weather at valley level AND hill level — conditions on a 600m summit can be 10°C colder and gale-force compared to the car park
- Your sleeping bag rating assumes you're wearing layers — a '0°C' bag won't keep you warm at 0°C in just a T-shirt
- Never camp within 50m of a water source — it's bad for the ecosystem and often against local bylaws
